Picking a major isn’t always easy. In fact, most people I meet in college are either undeclared or unsure about their current major.
Here are 3 things you need to understand about the process of choosing a major:
1. You’re not alone
So many students feel overwhelmed and start panicking when they don’t have their major decided by their sophomore year. For undecided students, the early years of college are there for you to explore your interests. And you’re not the only one who doesn’t have life figured out. Take a breather and use your time in college wisely.
2. Understand what your major allows you to do
When you pick your major, have a goal that you want to reach. Think about the plan you have for the future and how your degree can help you reach your goal. Do your research. Find out what sort of career paths are available to you because of what you’re studying.
3. You make the major; the major doesn’t make you
Choosing a major is only half the battle. It’s very important to gain experience in your field while you’re still in college. Look out for internships or project opportunities that will further your knowledge. Future employers want to see your academic achievements as well how well you are able to apply what you’ve learned into real world experiences. Make the most out of your major. Don’t just decide on a major because it sounds impressive.
Make an informed decision when it comes to deciding on your major. As a journalism student, I hear people question my choice all the time. But with the effort I put into understanding what a degree in journalism can do for me and what I can do with a degree in journalism, it feels like a no-brainer. Hopefully these tips can help you feel the same way.
