Descendants of Jessie and Sarah L. Johnson can now apply for the 2024 Herbert V. Johnson Family Scholarship.
Applicants need not be descendants by birth alone; those who are related by marriage and/or adoption may also apply.
The scholarship is sponsored by Herbert V. Johnson, president and founder of HVJ Associates, Inc., a multi-discipline engineering business with offices across Texas.

Each year, Johnson awards up to $20,000 to four winners. The scholarship is based on financial need, so the actual award amount may vary depending on other scholarships and financial aid received by an awardee.
Awardees may use the scholarship award to cover their annual tuition, room and board, and school books.
With the scholarship, Johnson aims to further his mission of helping his family realize their full potential.
As a first-generation college student, Johnson knows full well what it is to face challenges unique to first-gen students and to overcome barriers posed by financial constraints. But his own experience is also a testament to the transformative power of education, motivating him to smooth the path for others in his family.
“To be educated is to be powerful – it enables one to live a life of creativity, growth, contribution and fulfillment. Education has been key to the achievements and extraordinary fulfillment that I’ve experienced in life, and I know the challenges firsthand of getting a college education,” said Johnson.
“With finances being one, I want to reduce or eliminate that challenge for my family. So I have set up the Herbert V. Johnson Family Scholarship Fund to help the descendants of my parents, Jessie and Sarah L. Johnson,” he added.
Applicants must meet certain criteria and apply by June 30, 2024. Past awardees may reapply so long as they meet the scholarship’s requirements.
