Psychology suggests that your environment plays a huge role when it comes to how much information you retain while studying, which makes total sense. There’s no way you’re going to remember anything in your chemistry textbook if you try studying at a frat party.
You’re way better off studying in a open space, with lots of natural light and few distractions. I have a bunch of study spots in Manhattan and I want to share a few of my favorites with you. Us college kids gotta help each other out, right?
The New York Public Library (NYPL)
A library on a list of the best places to study? No surprise here. Although Manhattan has plenty of libraries, NYPL is hands down the best because of how humongous it is. There are more spots to sit than you can count and the architecture is breathtaking. This library has plenty of space, sunlight and resources at your disposal. Plus, free wi-fi. Score.
Washington Square Park
I obviously wouldn’t suggest studying here if it’s chilly outside, but this is the perfect spring semester study spot. The arch is awesome to look at and the fountain always provides a nice breeze. With plenty of room to hang out, this is the best place to meet up with a study group, enjoy the sun and people watch.
American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) – Milstein Hall of Ocean Life
Okay, so this one might sound weird at first. AMHN is home to a 94 feet long, 21,000-pound fiberglass model of a blue whale. Wild, I know. Once you reassure yourself that the whale will not fall on you and kill you, you can do what thousands of museum goers do every day: sit under the whale. The room is well lit and if you don’t mind the chatter of people around you, this is a perfect spot. Sometimes I just lay on the huge mat and read for hou rs. It’s extremely peaceful. Only downside: you need to pay admission to the museum but student admission is only 17 dollars with a valid student ID!
The Ludlow Hotel – Garden
Fun fact: most hotel lobbies are open to the public. Some, sure may be hectic with guests running in and out of the door but some have secluded areas that are perfect to study in. The Ludlow Hotel in the Lower East Side has a gorgeous garden where you can study. If you don’t want to be outside, their indoor lobby is just as awesome. I also like the Ace Hotel lobby. Bar hopping? Nah, hotel lobby hopping.
The Drama Bookshop
There’s a reason why Hamilton’s creator Lin-Manuel Miranda speaks so highly of this place. The Drama Bookshop won the Tony in 2011 (um yeah, a BOOKSHOP won a TONY AWARD) because of how wonderful of a place it is for theatre fans and performers alike. If you need to study for your Theatre Appreciation final, this is the place to go. There are plenty of places to lounge and read your favorite plays. Plus, everyone who works there is friendly and helpful.
Bank of America Tower – Atrium
New York has plenty of open spaces where students and business people go to be productive. You’re spoiled with amazing views of the city and fresh air to clear your mind. Being stuck inside a stuffy and crowded cafe can be uncomfortable when trying to study so why not treat yourself to the great outdoors?
I hope you enjoy all my secret study spots! Now get your notebook and textbooks – it’s studying time in the big city.
