Summer 2016: 10 Things to Do in NYC

It’s mid-March, just about halfway through the spring semester, and all I seem to do is dream of summer. As I stand outside in the freezing air of the commuter parking lot, my back breaking from my over packed tote, I try to convince myself that my hard work will pay off in the summer. After an extremely stressful semester, I look forward to having months in which my only assignment is to relax and enjoy the sun. If the thought of not having to go to class every morning isn’t enough motivation for you to push through, here are some exciting events happening around NYC this summer.

1. Governors Ball Music Festival

Where: New York City, NY | When: June 3-5, 2016

A two-day music festival on Randall’s Island, right by the Hudson River. Dance away to a great lineup of artists while enjoying the NYC skyline as your unforgettable backdrop. There are countless artists and bands performing, with headliners such as Kanye West, Robyn, Mac Miller and Elle King. With the amazing performers attending and the breathtaking views, The Governors Ball is bound to be a great time.

2.Shakespeare in the Park

Where: Delacorte Theater, Central Park | When: May 27-August 23

Whether you’re a theater geek, Shakespeare enthusiast, or just need something to do, a free show in Central Park is always a good idea. Enjoy watching some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays while enjoying the sunny weather, and beautiful landscape of Central Park.

3. The Mermaid Parade

Where: Coney Island | When: June 18th, 2016 @ 1PM

Now if this doesn’t excite you, I truly don’t know what will! Coney Island is hosting their 34th annual mermaid parade this summer, where thousands of people dress up in their best mermaid costumes with flawless makeup and creative floats. If you wish, you can register to be a part of the parade, or simply watch this extravagant parade.

4. Electric Daisy Carnival

Where: Citi Field, Queens | When: May 14-15

This is the perfect music festival for all you house music lovers- or even just music lovers in general. With headlining DJs, carnival rides, and interactive art illusions, not only will you be surrounded by insane music, but an overall good-vibe experience.

5. Readings at the Bridge

Where: Brooklyn Bridge | When: Mondays August 1-22

Books Beneath the Bridge is offering free outdoor listening sessions of famous authors reading their books. Get your book signed, ask any lingering questions, and enjoy the fresh air.

6. Smorgasburg

Where: Prospect Park, Brooklyn | When: Saturdays & Sundays (April-November)

A showcase of over 100 food vendors from both local and regional areas. It offers prepared or packaged food and beverages from some of the best food vendors in the nation. Not only does it offer tasty treats, but it also is located right on the Williamsburg Waterfront- offering some breathtaking views.

7. Bryant Park Bootcamp

Where: Bryant Park-6th Avenue Sides | When: Wednesdays

8. Taste of Time Square

Where: Times Square | When: June 6, 2016

9. The Jazz Age Lawn Party

Where: Governor’s Island NYC | When: June 11 & 12/ August 13 & 14

Time to get jazzy! Enjoy a blast from the past at this day long jazz music festival! Not only will there be live performances by jazz musicians, but you will be able to experience the culture. 10. Frieze Art Fair

Where: Randall’s Island Park- NYC | When: May 5-8
