The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is now accepting applications for its esteemed Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF). This initiative is designed for U.S. doctoral students focused on employing high-performance computing (HPC) to tackle intricate science and engineering challenges. Established in 1991, the CSGF program offers a $45,000 annual stipend along with a comprehensive suite of benefits aimed at fostering a dynamic and dedicated community of researchers.
Since its inception, the fellowship has cultivated over 675 scholars from 85 universities across the United States, many of whom have gone on to influential roles in DOE laboratories, industry and academia. The program’s unique emphasis on interdisciplinary research equips fellows to make significant contributions to the nation’s scientific and technological advancements, particularly in the realms of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
The fellowship supports two main tracks: one for students whose research involves the application of HPC to complex scientific problems, and another for those delving into applied mathematics, statistics, computer science and related areas to enhance HPC technology itself. This approach ensures that fellows are well-prepared to advance both foundational and applied aspects of computational science.
In addition to the generous stipend, fellows benefit from complete coverage of tuition and fees, along with an annual academic allowance. The fellowship is renewable for up to four years and includes a mandatory three-month practicum at one of 22 DOE research labs or sites nationwide, offering unparalleled practical experience and networking opportunities.
Prospective fellows must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents and are required to pursue uninterrupted, full-time doctoral study at an accredited U.S. institution.
