XQLS FAQs
GENERAL QUESTIONS:
How many scholarships will there be?
- XTH will identify up to FIVE students for the 2022-2023 academic school year.
What is the amount of the scholarship?
- Each student will receive an award of $3,000 to support their postsecondary journey.
Does this scholarship occur every year?
- At the moment, no. This is a one-time grant. This scholarship will be for the current 2022-2023 academic school year only. Success of XQLS during this academic year will determine the future outlook of the program.
When & how do the students receive the funds?
- Scholarships are funded by XQ, but are awarded by a 3rd party intermediary directly to students based upon clear guidelines and criteria established by XQ and XQ schools.
- Funds will be distributed in August prior to the beginning of the following school year, 2023-2024.
APPLICATION PROCESS:
Who applies for the scholarship?
- Students do not apply for the scholarship, they are nominated by their teachers and peers. Teachers will have a specific questionnaire form they will complete when they are ready to nominate students.
What are the criteria for who can receive the scholarship? If so, what is it?
- Yes, students who exemplify and demonstrate at least ONE of the XQ Learner Outcomes qualify. These students are doing said work and are at the forefront of High School Transformation. Each awardee must demonstrate a different Learner Outcome.
- It will be up to school leaders and educators to identify who those students are.
Is there an information session about how to apply and are there deadlines?
- XQ will hold information sessions via webinars for school leaders. There will also be a password protected portal with all pertinent info for schools to access and share with students.
If selected, what can students expect for notification?
- Students will be notified via email by their school, XQ and a 3rd party intermediary of XQ’s choosing.
ROLES & EXPECTATIONS:
What is the role of XQ?
- XQ is the funder. XQ believes that young people are at the center of high school transformation; and that students who exemplify the XQ Learner Outcomes are ready to engage in their dynamic futures and all the possibilities before them. Financially helping to support their future-driven ambitions is a means of removing economic barriers which may unfairly challenge their means.
How do you make sure XQLS and the selection process are equitable?
- XQ will provide resources and guidance to school leaders to ensure they understand how to make the most equitable decisions when identifying students. The nomination process is not based solely on academics, but rather on a holistic understanding of the student and their material reality.
- A predetermined committee made up of school leaders, teachers and counselors will select nominated students and work to identify the various needs of students to ensure that their decisions are consistent with the mission of XQ.
Are their expectations set for the school? If so, what are they?
- Yes. Schools are expected to nominate students who have demonstrated mastery of the XQ Learner outcomes. Schools will also have to complete a questionnaire form appropriately to ensure consistency.
Are their expectations set for the scholarship recipient? If so, what are they?
- Yes. It is expected that upon receiving the award students will commit to their post-secondary plans and join a cohort of fellow awardees in the XQ alumni network.
COMMUNICATIONS:
How would you advise schools to share this opportunity with their school community if this is not a scholarship opportunity that would be available yearly? And how will students learn more about the scholarship and application process?
- XQ will provide resources so school leaders and teachers can share information with ALL students in the class of 2023 via email and in-class announcements.
- XQ will provide physical materials such as posters to be placed around the school
FOR STUDENTS & FAMILIES:
What does the mentorship aspect look like?
- Students will be provided opportunities to connect with a cohort of fellow awardees where post-secondary mentors will advise and support students on their academic goals, and social-emotional well-being. Students will also receive support in developing their financial literacy skills.
Are there any rules for keeping the scholarship–maintaining GPA, attendance/participation in scholarship programs?
- As self-directed, lifelong learners who are deeply engaged in their own learning, we fully expect our recipients to maintain their GPAs to graduate prepared to face the future and what it has to offer. See the expectations listed above for more details.
What are the guidelines for how students can use the money?
- Students can use funds for any post-secondary school-related expenses. The mentorship program can help inform students on how to make the most responsible decisions that will sustain their post-secondary goals.
Will it be transferred directly to an institution of higher education for tuition?
- No, students will receive funds directly.
Will the student or family pay taxes on the money?
- Students will be provided a 1099 and should look up tax laws pertaining to their specific state. Most students will not have to pay taxes unless it exceeds the threshold for that state.
